“IF THINGS START HAPPENING, DON’T WORRY, DON’T STEW, JUST GO RIGHT ALONG AND YOU’LL START HAPPENING TOO.”
“What if I don’t get better? What if I have to have more procedures, tests, and check ups? What if I miss more classes and more time with friends” (10 year old Sarah)
When I met Sarah, she immediately went into talking all about her worries. She was anticipating all the worst scenarios and outcomes and she had a lot to say. What I immediately noticed was the disconnect between what she said and what her body posture revealed. She appeared detached from these statements – like she was reciting a script she had said over and over to anyone that confronted her.
We took this opportunity to gain some body knowledge. How did these anticipatory thoughts feel in her body? Where did she hold these feelings?
She immediately slouched over, and appeared to be weighted down. We decided to explore various weighted postures, feeling heaving and pressed downwards. As we practiced pushing and talking about the pressures of having an illness, negative experiences, and the unknown, we also realized that our heaviness had a tension that could feel quite strong and powerful.
She took a step into the weighted posture and pushed up into the sky with her hands. She pressed down into her feet and stood tall. She explored how the experiences that left her with ‘worries’ came with opportunites to be brave, and had a positive outcome. How her ability to continue through times and show her vulnerabilty allowed for strength and growth.
We took new powerful poses and movements. We added breathing and even smiles. She was able to join her discomfort and change her repeative thoughts to adaptive experiences she had grown from.
