I wish I could have watched more television (Sania age 9).

Sania told her parents consistently all of her upsets and disappointments. It was as if nothing was satisfying. Shows were too short, playing was not enough, food was too hot, too full, school was too easy…

At the same time, Sania had a joy and zest for what was to come. “I can’t wait for the weekend,” “I can’t wait for next year.”

Hearing all these interactions I immediately noticed her difficulty with the here and now. What was it like to actually stay in her body? In session, we started with a movement routine: D.A.N.C.E. We began by Differentiating each part of our body movements. Moving in singular motions (fingers, hands, arms). Then, we Attached these movements together and moved at the same time. Sania, immediately stated a concern, and a “can’t wait…”. So I helped her return back to her body. We went back to moving.

Narrated what I was seeing and brought to Consciousness her observations of her heart beat, her feelings, the themes arising. Then I showed Empathic engagement. I communicated an affirmation of her efforts to stay in her body. She stood holding her heart and feeling her chest rising and falling. She didn’t change a thing.

She then drew for me a picture of a mountain. At the bottom she put it was hard and used what she called dreary colors. The climbing was unfamiliar but very peaceful and interesting. And the top she left with a question mark of unknown. She expressed. “ I’m not going to rush up there yet can we keep moving right here for now?”

We took a deep breath and smiled.

Opportunities like this make me truly inspired and grateful. Putting my practice in action to create positive change fuels the passion for my work. Thank you for sharing this Moving Moment with me!
